Use of physiological data to improve user experience in immersive virtual reality: pediatric applications

Intervention area

Smart home

Start date

September 1, 2022

End date

August 31, 2024

The objective of this mandate is to test the feasibility of using low-cost sensors to collect and analyze user peripheral physiological data during immersive virtual reality (VR) experiences in pediatric physical rehabilitation and pain reduction contexts. Physiological data will be integrated within a real-time biofeedback loop, meaning that the user’s physiological response will be monitored, analyzed by the system and that it will adapt the experience to allow the user psychophysiological state to influence visual and auditory stimuli within the immersive virtual environment. This research program will develop ‘smart’, personalized VR applications using machine learning techniques to improve children’s VR experiences and augment and sustain the beneficial effects of VR immersion in pediatric health care.
