Proof of concept of an active knee orthosis using hyper-redundant soft binary actuators

Intervention area

Mobility

Start date

January 1, 2012

End date

April 1, 2014

Commercially available orthoses are often designed to passively counteract external destabilizing moments during walking or sporting activities. Their effects are often difficult to measure, and limited to a single plane. Active aids would act in synergy with the body’s muscles, adding compensations in the spatial plane and in relation to task events (such as heel lift and toe lift during walking). The aim of this mandate is to design, prototype and characterize a knee orthosis system using hyper-redundant flexible binary actuation technology.
