Automation and validation of a method for measuring 3D kinematics during propulsion of an athletics wheelchair

Intervention area

Start date

January 1, 2017

End date

November 1, 2018

This project involves developing an algorithm for measuring the 3D kinematics of the body during the propulsion of an athletics wheelchair (FRA) on a track. This algorithm will be based on a video of the athlete viewed from the front during the race, using a fisheye camera (GoPro) mounted on the front of the FRA. Spherical markers will be attached to the athlete’s chair and segments, and the 3D position of these markers will be calculated based on an optical calibration of the camera and the coordinates and size of the spherical projections of these markers on the image. This project is in two phases, where phase 1 is the design of an algorithm enabling automatic tracking of spherical markers from a video and calculating the 3D position in the camera frame, taking into account the errors that will be induced due to vibrations.
